General Theological Seminary is pleased to announce the 2013 Kay Butler Gill Lecturer in Christian Spirituality: the Rev. James Martin, Society of Jesus. A nationally renowned spiritual teacher, Father Martin is a Jesuit priest, author, and culture editor of America, the national Catholic magazine. His books include the newly published Between Heaven and Mirth and the best-selling The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything.
Martin will deliver the lecture, Rejoice Always: Joy, Humor and Laughter in the Spiritual Life, on Thursday, April 11, at 7:00 p.m. Who says religion needs to be gloomy? He will speak on how true faith leads to joy, how the saints and spiritual masters used humor, and how laughter is a gift from God. The general public is cordially invited to the lecture. The Kay Butler Gill Lecture in Christian Spirituality is an annual lecture that heralds the place of the field of spirituality within the theological academy. In 2008, the lecture was endowed by a generous gift from the Kay Butler Gill estate, in gratitude for Kay’s years of study and formation at The Center for Christian Spirituality at General Seminary and her ministry as a spiritual director who, as she so thoughtfully put it, “had spiritual conversations with others.”
Past lecturers have included Sandra Schneiders, Martin Smith, Tilden Edwards, Roberta Bondi, Alan Jones, and Margaret Guenther. In 2010, Janet Ruffing spoke on Love Mysticism: Relic or Contemporary Reality? In 2011, Robin Jensen encouraged a visual interior spirituality in Training the Heart to See: The Epiphanic Nature of the Visual Arts. In 2012, John Philip Newell invited a holistic, reconciling spirituality in A New Harmony: The Spirit, the Earth, and the Human Soul.
