Meet Our New Faculty – Dr. Joshua Davis

Josh-Davis-HeadshotDr. Joshua Davis begins this term as General’s new Assistant Professor of Systematic Theology. He has been a Visiting Assistant Professor of Religion at The University of the South and Visiting Assistant Professor of Catholic Studies at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He also has served as an adjunct instructor of scripture, history, and theology at the Loyola University Institute for Pastoral Studies in Chicago.

Davis’ scholarly work focuses on contemporary theologies of grace and creation, and he has special interests in the intimate relationship between theology, spiritual practice, and creative social transformation. He co-founded the Theology and Apocalyptic working group at the American Academy of Religion, and his most recent publication is the edited collection, with Douglas Harink, Apocalyptic and the Future of Theology: With and Beyond J. Louis Martyn (Cascade Press). His first book, Waiting and Being: Creation, Freedom, and Grace in Western Theology (Fortress Press) will appear later this Fall, and he is currently completing a monograph entitled, On Providence: Metaphysics and Typology (Cascade Press). He is also writing the introduction for a new reprinted edition of Hans Frei’s The Identity of Jesus Christ (Cascade Press). He plans to focus attention next on developing the doctrinal significance of the baptismal theology of the 1979 Book of Common Prayer, specifically in terms of the idea notion of the Whole Christ (totus Christus).

Davis comes to General Seminary with his wife, the Rev. Danielle Thompson and their two young children, Joshua and Jeremiah. Thompson also recently began her work as General’s Chaplain for Pastoral Care, having previously been Associate Rector at St. Chrysostom’s Episcopal Church in Chicago. The family is settling to life on the Close and in New York City, and their son is enrolled at the GTS Children’s Garden Preschool.

In November, GTS alumni/ae will have a chance to meet Professor Davis at the annual Alumni/ae gathering, where he will be conducting a book-signing for his new book.
