The Episcopal Church has announced that the Rev. Canon Stephanie Spellers, Adjunct Professor of Church and Society and Director of Mission and Reconciliation at The General Theological Seminary, has been named Canon to the Presiding Bishop for Evangelism and Reconciliation. She will be responsible for supporting the ministry of the Presiding Bishop and Primate as it pertains to evangelism and reconciliation efforts at the local, congregational, diocesan, and church-wide levels. “Her work will involve helping to spread the good news of Jesus to the church and through the church to the world,” says Presiding Bishop Michael Curry in a statement from The Episcopal Church.
In following this new call, Spellers is providing to her students—and to all who are under formation—an example of practiced leadership and how service to the church can be a real and valuable part of ministry. After taking up this new position, Spellers will continue her connection with General Seminary, where she will remain as an Adjunct Professor, teaching the Integrative Seminar as part of The Way of Wisdom. She will also participate in community life at General, particularly in presiding and preaching in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd.
About Spellers, the Very Rev. Kurt H. Dunkle, Dean and President of General Seminary, says “Stephanie has been an important part of the launch of The Way of Wisdom and will continue to provide leadership to General students in The Wisdom Year Integrative Seminar. We congratulate Bishop Curry on his excellent selection, and wish her the best in her new position as she continues her work in the wider Church.”
