At a service on the evening of September 29, 2016, entering students at The General Theological Seminary signed the Matriculation Book, the same book signed by the first class in 1822 and every entering class since. As “St. Patrick’s Breastplate” was played on the organ and sung by the congregation, each student processed to the front of the Chapel as the General Seminary community witnessed his or her matriculation being recorded in the venerable book. Matthew Burette, Class of 2017, who is completing his Wisdom Year residency for The General Theological Seminary at St. Ann and the Holy Trinity in Brooklyn, will be leading a discussion on “Sacred Conversations on Race,” prompted by recent and ongoing incidents of violence and dignity violations against people of color, and our commitment to the value of every person. These conversations are intended to create a context in which people can speak and listen, learn about others’ experiences, and cooperate in addressing racism.
