General Seminary TV Special to Air on CBS-TV Christmas Eve

The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church (GTS) has spent the last week putting the finishing touches on an hour long television program, Christmas in Chelsea Square, that will air over CBS stations nationwide on December 24th at 11:35 pm (EST). The 194-year-old seminary was selected by the network last summer to produce the annual television special. The central portion of the program features a traditional Christmas service of lessons and carols for which the homilist is the Episcopal Church’s Presiding Bishop and Primate, the Most Rev.  Read more...

General Seminary Appoints New Leadership Positions

The Rev. Lang Lowrey, President of The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church (GTS) today announced the appointment of two new faculty leadership positions to oversee the school’s academic life and to provide ceremonial oversight of the Chapel of the Good Shepherd. The appointments anticipate the departure of the Seminary’s present Dean, the Rt. Rev. Peter James Lee, who has been named Interim Dean of the American Cathedral in Paris, a position Bishop Lee will assume in January 2012.  Read more...

General Seminary to Produce 2011 Christmas Eve Program for CBS-TV

New York City – The General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church (GTS) has been selected to produce the 2011 CBS Christmas Eve television special to air nationwide on December 24th at 11:30 pm (EST). Nearly all the network’s affiliated stations carry the annual Christmas program and so viewers are expected to number in the many millions. The 194-year-old seminary is known for the beauty of its Episcopal liturgy and music as well as its idyllic campus located in the Chelsea district of New York City on a square block known as Chelsea Square.  Read more...

On Friday, October 14, 2011 at 3:30 p.m. The General Theological Seminary (GTS) will formally dedicate the school’s new Christoph Keller Jr. Library, which opened to the GTS community late this summer. Presiding at the service will be the seminary’s Interim Dean, the Rt. Rev. Peter James Lee as well as the Chair of the Seminary’s Board of Trustees, the Rt. Rev. Mark S. At its fall Convocation on Thursday, October 13 at 5:30 pm The General Theological Seminary, the oldest seminary of the Episcopal Church, will award its Doctor of Divinity degree, honoris causa, to the Rev. Dr. Bruce Chilton, Bernard Iddings Bell Professor of Religion at Bard College; the Rt. Rev. Charles Edward Jenkins III, retired Bishop of Louisiana; and the Rt. Rev. Prince G. General Seminary’s Fall Semester Offers Great Learning Opportunities

New York City – Beginning Tuesday, September 6, a lively array of theological courses will be offered on the General Seminary’s beautiful and historic campus in the heart of New York City.  The courses, all on timely issues, are taught by professors who are eminent in their fields. All meet only once a week and may be audited or taken for graduate-level credit. Unless otherwise noted, courses run from September 6 through the end of the term on December 12.  Read more...

New Testament Professor Appointed at General Seminary

New York City – The Executive Committee of the Trustees of The General Theological Seminary (GTS) on June 22, 2011 unanimously approved the appointment of the Rev. Katherine A. Shaner as Assistant Professor of New Testament. Ordained in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA), Prof. Shaner is currently a candidate for the Doctor of Theology degree at Harvard Divinity School where her scholarly specialization is in the field of New Testament and Early Christian History.  Read more...

New York City–The Rev. Lang Lowrey, Interim President of the General Theological Seminary (GTS), announced today that ownership of the Seminary’s residential property on West 20th Street known as Chelsea 2,3,4 was transferred on March 30 to The Brodsky Organization. This transaction is the latest in a continued and successful working relationship between the two organizations that started with the development of the Chelsea Enclave, a building that will house GTS’s new Keller Library.  Read more...
