2016 Annual Garden Party [PHOTOS]

On June 23, 2016, the Chelsea Square Conservancy at The General Theological Seminary held its annual Garden Party. Over 175 friends, alumni, and neighbors joined the GTS community to enjoy the Close, as sunlight broke out from a mostly cloudy day.

Accompanied by the dulcet tones of a string quartet, the children played on the lawn and conversations were made as attendees enjoyed delicious hors d’oeuvres and a selection of beverages.  Read more...

One of the delightful things about growing up is learning how humorous verbal misunderstandings had been in my youth. My mother kept a small notebook labeled “Malaprops.” It was never malicious; just humorous. For example, her best friend used to say she was wearing a “little casualty dress.” So, as I grew up, I listened for my own collection of malapropisms.  Read more...

Santosh Marray ’09, D.D. ’16 Elected Bishop of Easton

The Rt. Rev. Santosh K. Marray, who received his S.T.M. from The General Theological Seminary in 2009, as well as a D.D. honoris causa at our most recent Commencement, has been elected as the 11th Bishop of the Diocese of Easton. The convention was held at Trinity Cathedral, Easton, Maryland on June 11, 2016.

Marray is currently an assistant bishop in the Diocese of Alabama and was Bishop of Seychelles, Province of the Indian Ocean, from 2005-2008.  Read more...

Call for Nominations: 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award

The Alumni Executive Committee of The General Theological Seminary is pleased to announce that nominations are now being accepted for the 2017 Distinguished Alumni Award. This annual award is for Seminary degree-holders worthy of special recognition. The award presentation will take place during the 2017 Alumni Gathering. The date for the event will be announced.

Recipients of the award are graduates of the Seminary in either priestly or lay orders.  Read more...

General Seminary Student Participates in Canterbury Scholars Programme

The Canterbury Scholars Programme is a conference which provides opportunities for Anglican/Episcopalian Christians from around the Anglican Communion to pray, study, and live together at the Canterbury Cathedral Lodge, on the doorstep of Canterbury Cathedral. The participants are given the opportunity to learn through partnership, against the backdrop of the history and tradition of Canterbury.

Recently, as part of this two-week program, Michael Horvath, a rising senior from The General Theological Seminary, joined other seminarians and newly ordained from around world to meet the Archbishop of Canterbury, as well as to visit the Anglican Communion office and Lambeth Palace.  Read more...

St. Sava’s Finds Home at General Seminary

G. Jeffrey MacDonald of The Living Church recently wrote an article about the ongoing relationship between The General Theological Seminary and the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava, whose church building was gutted in a fire in May.

The Rev. Emily Wachner Appointed as Lecturer in Pastoral Theology

The General Theological Seminary is pleased to announce the appointment of the Rev. Emily Wachner to the faculty as a full-time Lecturer in Pastoral Theology. Wachner will also continue as the Director of Integrative Programs, a role she has held for the past year. In this capacity, Wachner has expanded and strengthened the Wisdom Year program, placing twelve students in Wisdom Year sites for the 2016-2017 academic year.  Read more...

Elizabeth Schrader ’16 Receives the Clement J. Whipple Prize for Forthcoming Article in the Harvard Theological Review

During the Commencement ceremonies at The General Theological Seminary on May 11, 2016, Elizabeth Brooke Schrader, M.A. ’15, S.T.M. ’16, was awarded the Clement J. Whipple Prize for a paper submitted by a student accepted for publication. She received the prize for her article, “Was Martha of Bethany Added to the Fourth Gospel in the Second Century?” which is forthcoming in the Harvard Theological Review in early 2017.  Read more...

A Tribute to Profs. Mitties DeChamplain and Robert Owens [PHOTOS]

On May 9, during Commencement week at The General Theological Seminary, a special Evensong and a reception were held to honor the contributions to the Seminary of the Rev. Dr. Mitties DeChamplain and the Rev. Dr. Robert Owens. The event was an opportunity to give thanks for the years of ministry of DeChamplain and Owens at General Seminary as Professor Owens continues to venture into retirement and Mother Mitties continues her priestly ministry into new settings.  Read more...

Experiencing the Seminarians of Color Conference

On March 16-19, I had the pleasure of joining other students at the Seminarians of Color Conference in Oviedo, Florida near Orlando. We gathered at the Canterbury Retreat Center in the Diocese of Central Florida, under the conference’s theme, “Gathering around the Jesus Movement: Evangelism and Reconciliation.” Three seminarians from GTS attended: Michael Horvath, Deborah Lee and Sharon Sutton. In total six Episcopal seminaries and three non-episcopal seminaries were represented.  Read more...

Paula Jackson ’85 Receives 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award [PHOTOS]

On May 10, 2016, during the Alumni Memorial Eucharist in the Chapel of the Good Shepherd, the Rev. Paula M. Jackson, Class of 1985, accepted the 2016 Distinguished Alumni Award from The General Theological Seminary. The Rev. Dr. R. Scott White, Class of 1996, and President of the Alumni Executive Committee, was Celebrant at the service, and Jackson was the preacher.

In his remarks as he presenting her with the award, White thanked Jackson “for being a witness to the Gospel, in ways that many of us still only hope to become.  Read more...
