In Memoriam: Carl Gerdau ’59, DD ‘12

The Rev. Canon Carlson Gerdau, Class of 1959 and a recipient of General’s honorary doctorate in 2012, died Saturday, May 27, 2017 of heart failure at the age of 84.

Gerdau served as canon to two Presiding Bishops: the Most Rev. Frank Griswold and the Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori during her transition into office. With a particular interest and expertise in seminary education, he served as Chair of the Board of Bexley Hall Seminary, and also received honorary doctorates from Bexley as well as Virginia Theological Seminary.  Read more...

The Alumni Executive Committee (AEC) of The General Theological Seminary announces that nominations are being accepted for the 2018 Distinguished Alumni Award, as well as positions on the AEC and the Board of Trustees.

  • The Distinguished Alumni Award nominees may be degree-holders, either lay or ordained, worthy of special recognition. The award presentation will take place during the Alumni Gathering in May, 2018. Past recipients have included exemplars of a broad range of both extraordinarily original, path-breaking ministries and extraordinarily faithful, though quiet, ministries.

Scott MacDougall ’07 Named CDSP Assistant Professor of Theology

Dr. Scott MacDougall, Class of 2007, whose research centers on ecclesiology and eschatology, has been named assistant professor of theology at Church Divinity School of the Pacific.

As well as his M.A. in Theology from General, MacDougall holds a PhD from Fordham University, where he also taught. He has been a visiting assistant professor at CDSP since 2015.

Art Powell ’83 Named Honorary Canon in New Jersey

The Rev. Canon Arthur P. Powell, Class of 1983, has been named an Honorary Canon of Trinity Cathedral in the Diocese of New Jersey. The title was awarded at the 233rd Diocesan Convention in recognition of Powell’s long and dedicated service to the diocese.

Powell has served as rector of Holy Apostles in Yardville, NJ (formerly St. James Church and St. Matthias Church) since 1990.  Read more...

The Rev. William D. White, Class of 1954, died on his 93rd birthday, Tuesday, May 2, 2017. Ordained to the priesthood in the Diocese of Maryland, he served Episcopal churches in Maryland, Arizona, New York and Maine.

For more than 10 years following his retirement, Fr. White served as volunteer chaplain at Parkview Medical Center, Brunswick, Maine, and has been a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Brunswick.  Read more...

The Rev. Amanda Gott, Class of 2004, is the new rector at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Lincoln, Nebraska.

For the past seven years, Gott has been rector of Grace & St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Hamden, Connecticut. Prior to that, she was assistant rector of Church of the Good Shepherd in Nashua, New Hampshire.

Gott is originally from Atlanta and graduated from a high school of performing arts.  Read more...

The Rt. Rev. Michael Whinney, who received a Master of Theology degree from General during a sabbatical from the Church of England in 1990, died February 3, 2017 at the age of 86.

Whinney was a well-loved bishop who made a great contribution to the Church of England in Birmingham as Bishop of Aston (1982-1985) after fruitful ministry in Rainham, Bermondsey and as Archdeacon of Southwark.  Read more...

The Rev. Warren Bradley Toebben, Class of 2014, has been called as the next rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Milwaukee, WI. Toebben is currently an assistant priest at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Eugene, Oregon, and will join St. Paul’s in June.

At St. Mary’s in Eugene, Toebben has preached regularly, directed educational programs and collaboratively overseen the envisioning, developing and implementing of hospitality events.  Read more...

She is currently serving as interim Rector at St. Andrews Episcopal church in College Park, MD. Before that she served as Vicar at the Holy Nativity Episcopal Church in Baltimore. The Rev. Dr. William Frederic Starr, Class of 1958, died on Feb. 11, 2017 at his home in Chilmark, MA surrounded by his family. He was 83.

A direct descendant of Dr. Comfort Starr, who emigrated to the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635, Starr was born on May 17, 1933 in New Haven, Conn. but spent his youth in Watertown, Conn. He attended the Taft School, and Yale University, before he matriculated at General, and then received his Ph.D.  Read more...

For the last eight years, Corsello has been Rector of St. Luke’s, San Francisco. She previously served as Senior Associate Rector at St. James’s, Richmond, VA, and before that as Associate Rector, St. Mary’s-in-Tuxedo, Tuxedo Park, NY.

In Memoriam: Fred Borsch ‘60

The Rt. Rev. Frederick Houk Borsch, Class of 1960 and D.D. 1988, died in his sleep early April 11 from complications of myelodysplastic syndrome, a form of leukemia. He was 81 years old. Borsch served as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of Los Angeles from 1988 to 2002. The clergy of the Diocese learned of Borsch’s death as they gathered for the annual Holy Tuesday renewal of vows at the Cathedral Center on April 11.  Read more...

Dr. Courtney V. Cowart (M.A., 1994, Th.D. 2001, and a former member of the Board of Trustees) has been appointed byThe Society for the Increase of the Ministry as its incoming executive director effective March 1. SIM’s current executive director, Thomas Moore, will serve with Cowart until his retirement from that position on SIM’s 160th birthday, October 2, 2017. Cowart comes to SIM from the School of Theology of the University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee, where she has served as the Director of the Beecken Center and Associate Dean.  Read more...

The Rev. Canon Deborah Dunn, Class of 1991, rector of St. Peter’s, Santa Maria, CA, and a former deployment officer for the Diocese of Los Angeles, died April 19, at Cottage Hospital, Santa Barbara, after suffering heart failure and complications of a stroke. She was 65 and had served as rector in Santa Maria since 2007.

Bishop David Ball, Class of 1953, who led the Episcopal Diocese of Albany for 14 years and who was devoted to preserving the historic Cathedral of All Saints, died Tuesday afternoon at the age of 90, in his room at the Loudonville Assisted Living Residence, where he had welcomed dozens of friends in recent days as they came to say their goodbyes to a beloved native son and spiritual beacon.  Read more...
