The Curious Nature of Church Foundations

The Curious Nature of Church Foundations

The Very Rev. Kurt H. Dunkle
Dean and President

My father was a builder. Not a metaphorical builder, but an actual one. He moved my mom and his family to Florida right after the second World War from a small mill town in central Pennsylvania to start a construction company. He thought that would be a good foundation for the future.

He built houses and buildings for people and companies.  Read more...

An Early Spring

An Early Spring

Dr. Michael DeLashmutt
Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs

This article is being published in the depths of winter, but I come to you to tell you of growth and fruition. Perhaps it’s cliché these days to talk about the changing landscape of theological education—some recent descriptions even take on an almost cataclysmic tone. But, as followers of Jesus, I believe we should be fundamentally oriented toward hope.  Read more...

The Nourishment of the Vine

The Nourishment of the Vine

The Very Rev. Kurt H. Dunkle
Dean and President

During Orientation for this new term, I was listening to our faculty introduce themselves to new students and explain their unique areas of interest. Prof. Michael Battle described his way of life in teaching and scholarship as “amphibian.” I loved that great new way of looking at our very Anglican “both/and” view of addressing life. Prof. Todd Brewer made his point simply: “I want to make the Bible exciting for you!” A classic Jesus Movement attitude.  Read more...

Michael W. DeLashmutt, Ph.D., was recently appointed as Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs at The General Theological Seminary. GTS News sat down with him to talk about his background and what brought him to General.

Would you tell us a little about your background?

I grew up on a family farm in southwest Iowa. Though I was baptized as an infant in the Methodist church, I was re-baptized in a Baptist church at around the age of eight.  Read more...

The Proof of the Pudding

The Proof of the Pudding

The Very Rev. Kurt H. Dunkle
Dean and President

One of the delightful things about growing up is learning how humorous verbal misunderstandings had been in my youth. My mother kept a small notebook labeled “Malaprops.” It was never malicious; just humorous. For example, her best friend used to say she was wearing a “little casualty dress.” So, as I grew up, I listened for my own collection of malapropisms.  Read more...

Education and Formation

Education and Formation

The Very Rev. Kurt H. Dunkle
Dean and President

Many of you have heard or read my standard speech about what we do at General Seminary. In case you missed it, here it is: “We only do two things at General: Education and Formation. Each needs to be roughly in balance, and each needs to be integrated.”

In the past few years, we have spent a great deal of time developing the second of these two concepts: formation.  Read more...

Presiding Bishop Michel Curry Preaches at General Seminary [PHOTOS + VIDEO]

On March 22, 2016, the Most Rev. Michel B. Curry, Presiding Bishop and Primate of The Episcopal Church, visited The General Theological Seminary to preside over the Eucharist, preach, and meet with General Seminary students. After preaching a well-received—and exuberant—sermon at the Community Eucharist, Curry greeted worshippers with grace, joy, and generosity of time. He shook hands, rekindling old acquaintances while making new ones. The General Seminary community then gathered with Curry for their weekly Community Dinner and afterward met at the Dean’s residence for a discussion with the Presiding Bishop.  Read more...

The Four Pillars

The Four Pillars

The Very Rev. Kurt H. Dunkle
Dean and President

In December you should have received another opportunity to offer financial support to The General Theological Seminary in the mail. I hope you responded in one of the suggested eight ways before the year’s end. A hearty “thanks!”

In that letter, I outlined how we are focused on three goals of sustainability: financial, missional, and cultural. While not yet home free, we are making substantial progress and there are clear markers of success.  Read more...

Integrating The Wisdom Year

Integrating The Wisdom Year

The Rev. Emily Wachner
Director of Integrative Programs

When I first learned how to drive a manual transmission car 15 years ago, my instructor began by teaching me to envision the inside of the car—the “theory,” if you will, of what made the car go. Before I ever turned the key, I learned how the gears worked together, what the clutch did, how the stick moved, and what it controlled.  Read more...

General Seminary St. Nicholas Party

General Seminary St. Nicholas Party

All spirits were lifted as The General Theological Seminary held its annual St. Nicholas party on December 9. The Seminary family gathered for Eucharist, a tree-lighting, Christmas caroling, and a festive community dinner. As part of General Seminary’s annual tradition, Dean Kurt H. Dunkle read aloud to the children ’Twas the Night before Christmas.

In the spirit of Family, the Eucharist was celebrated by the Rev.  Read more...
